FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions

How can I recycle my glass?

As of January 1, 2019 glass is no longer being recycled by Waste Management. It is important to know that glass is still a very a valuable commodity which is supported by significant market demand.

The Pennsylvania Resource Council (PRC) is actively working with industry and community partners to develop a new network of convenient and accessible glass recycling drop off sites to allow residents and businesses to continue to recycle their glass. The drop off sites will certainly not be as convenient as the curb in front of our homes, but they will respect glass as a commodity for use in manufacturing it into new products. To learn more about PRC’s efforts, go to the PRC's Glass Recycling Program page.

How do I dispose of large bulky items?

As part of our trash collection service, Waste Management will pick up a variety of special materials not accepted in the standard pickup, including paint products, automotive batteries, televisions, household chemicals and more. A special pickup MUST be scheduled, and can be done by calling 1-800-449-7587, by email at AtYourDoor [at] WM.com, or online at Waste Management at your Door website.

You can visit the Waste Management website or call at 1-800-866-4460.

What day is my garbage and recycling collected?

Normal trash and recycling collection takes place weekly on Wednesdays. Trash and recyclables should be placed at the curb after 5 p.m. the day before pickup. Recycling containers can be purchased at any hardware or home improvement store (Ben Avon Borough does not provide bins).

If a holiday (New Years Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, or Christmas) falls on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, trash/recycle pickup will be moved to Thursday.

See the borough calendar for trash and recycling collection dates.

What types of items are recycled?

Waste management currently accepts paper; flattened cardboard & paperboard; food & beverage cans; plastic bottles, jars, jugs, and tubs (any other plastic shape must go in the trash). For more information, visit their Recycling 101 webpage or call 1-800-866-4460.
